The man chasing his past
Jay Gatsby was not always rich. He was born poor and grew up with very little. He changed his name from James Gatz because he wanted to forget his past and become someone important.
Gatsby is hopeful and very determined, but he is also stuck in the past. He truly believes that if he works hard enough, he can fix everything and make life perfect again.
Gatsby’s main goal is to be with Daisy. Everything he does, like making money and throwing big parties, is meant to get her attention.
Gatsby represents the American Dream. His story shows how chasing a dream can feel exciting, but also lead to disappointment when the dream is not realistic.
Gatsby matters because he shows how people can lose themselves while trying to reach something they want too badly. Even though he tries hard, his dream does not turn out the way he hoped.
